National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD)

UC San Diego is now an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).  NCFDD is an independent professional development, training, and mentoring community of graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty members. Members have reported that working with the NCFDD has helped them enormously with their scholarly productivity while managing the competing demands of scholarship, teaching, service, and personal life.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) will sponsor a group of professors and graduate students for the highly acclaimed NCFDD Faculty Success Program, a fifteen-week, virtual boot camp from Aug. 24 – Dec. 5, 2014. Priority will be given to assistant professors and professors who have been tenured since 2012. Applications will be accepted until Friday, August 8th.

As the NCFDD’s signature program, the Faculty Success Program is designed to transform faculty members’ personal and professional lives through:

  • Setting achievable personal and professional goals;
  • Establishing a consistent, healthy, and sustainable daily writing routine;
  • Developing a publication profile that exceeds the institution’s promotion criteria;
  • Mastering best-practices in academic time management;
  • Identifying areas of resistance and developing strategies to move through them;
  • Nourishing physical and emotional health; and
  • Providing a supportive community to process challenges and celebrate successes.

Please see attached flyer and forward this email to your department to ensure your faculty, post-docs, and graduate students utilize this new resource.

Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research

We are delighted to announce that the Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) 2014 annual conference will be held at California State University, Fullerton on Saturday, November 22, 2014. The theme for this year’s conference is “Illuminating Ideas”, and this event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities, and to build and nurture relationships and connections throughout the regional community. We are also excited to announce that jazz pianist, composer, and Grammy Award-winning arranger and Professor of Music at Cal State Fullerton, Bill Cunliffe, will deliver an inspiring keynote address. The research that students will present at this conference fosters critical thinking skills as well as practical application of learning. The conference itself is an opportunity for students to communicate their ideas clearly, effectively, and persuasively.
