Friends of the International Center: Jan 31 & Feb 7 Dinners

The Friends of the International Center is holding two events at the International Center within the next few weeks that we hope you might choose to attend.

The first event is our Ethnic Dinner Scholarship Fundraiser on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 6:30 pm featuring a Chinese New Year Themed Menu, a brief presentation by former scholarship recipient(s), and a photographic presentation entitled Hidden Gems of Japan by Professor Chris Wills. Details, including registration information, can be found on the flyer below.

The second event is part of our more casual, family-friendly Friends Dinner Social Program, on Saturday, February 7, at 6:00 pm. This dinner has Celebrating Global Friendship as its theme and the menu will include dishes representing countries from around the world. Details, including registration information, can be found on the second flyer below.

Both events are a wonderful way for our guests to gain a better sense of who we are and what we do on campus. If you are unable to attend, I hope that you will share the information/flyers with your colleagues and that you will consider joining us at one of our future events.

CALPIRG at UCSD

CALPIRG runs volunteer and internship programs on campus, teaching students to run effective campaigns on environmental and public interest issues that they care about, like fighting global warming and promoting democracy.

You can read more about CALPIRG at calpirgstudents.org. Last fall we helped register thousands of students to vote and built support for our San Diego Go Solar campaign. This winter are focused on continuing our efforts to promote solar power and running a Water Watch campaign to reduce our water usage across campus.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you are interested in getting involved with any of our campaigns!

APDCC Winter Consulting Project – Deadline 1/6/2015

The APD Consulting Club is launching a new consulting project this month, and our application deadline is tomorrow, 1/6/2015.

Project description

APDCC will work with an online research-focused marketplace to define the landscape for instrument sharing and freelance service provision within UC San Diego.

Our client connects science and business professionals with pay-per-use laboratory space, laboratory equipment, and freelance research services. In this way our client services both the start-up boom and the increase in pharmaceutical outsourcing. As a major holder of equipment capital and a source of science professionals interested in developing commercial opportunities, UC San Diego represents a substantial potential sector of our client’s marketplace. We will be working to define the interest level amongst academic researchers for offering equipment or services on a contract research basis, to identify logistical barriers and to model the financial potential of opening up specific equipment for pay-per-use services.

We feel this is very relevant to APDCC members, many of whom have a particular interest in launching revenue-generating and commercial opportunities from their research.

What YOU will get out of the experience:

Working with the APD Consulting Group will be an exciting and educational experience.  This project will be an introduction to alternate career paths in consulting, business development, entrepreneurship, and marketing.   Furthermore, this particular project addresses a cutting edge business question faced by many institutions that are looking to take advantage of industry out-sourcing to leverage revenue. You will have the opportunity to expand and strengthen your existing skill set and resume.

Time commitment:

8 h/week of business consulting tasks

1 h/week for a team meeting

Project start: early January

Project end: March

Successful team members should exhibit all of the skills below.

–   Team player

–   Self-driven

–   Quantitative skills

–   Ability to commit to the entire length of the project

How to apply:

Email your resume to apd.consulting.club@gmail.com. We will reply with date/time options for a 20 minute interview. Deadline to submit resume is end of day January 6th.  During the interview, be prepared to explain why you would like to work on a consulting project, what skills or experiences you are bringing to the project and whether you are able to commit to the project for the full duration.

2015 International Conference on Global Health

The 2015 International Conference on Global Health: Prevention and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders and HIV will be held from April 22-24, 2015 in Hangzhou, China.

  1. The deadline for abstract submission has been extended to January 5, 2015. If you are interested in presenting your work, please submit your abstract now via http://huiyi.e-inshow.com/.  Note that we are no longer accepting new applications for travel awards.
  2.  We have heard that because of technical glitches, some individuals have had trouble using the conference website to submit their abstract and/or travel award application.  I will be distributing a separate email via our distribution list that encourages people to submit materials to me directly if they did not previously receive a confirmation email from me.  You will likely receive that other email. However, please note that if you received the present email from me (the one you are reading now), it means that I did receive your materials already and thus you do not need to submit your materials to me again. We apologize for any confusion!

  1. Finally, please let me know if you have any questions or would like any additional information about the conference.
