Graduate Assistant – Student Affairs, Graduate Division – Summer Training Academy for Research Success (STARS) Program

STARS is an 8 week summer research program designed to provide underrepresented undergraduate students with intensive summer research experience. Students conduct research full-time with a faculty mentor. They also attend weekly graduate school preparation workshops and make a presentation at the UC San Diego Summer Research Conference. The goal is to prepare students for graduate studies and increase their motivation to apply to UC San Diego graduate programs.

The Graduate Assistant will work as the assistant to the STARS Program Director and assist with the preparation, programming support, and coordination of the summer research program. The Graduate Assistant will provide general support that may include: composing emails, communication with program participants via email and telephone, working with the undergraduate student worker, maintaining participant databases, coordinating meetings with the Graduate Advocates, organizing meetings with summer mentors, coordinating program orientation and social activities, attending weekly staff meetings, making catering and facility arrangements, performing clerical duties such as filing, data entry, creating spreadsheets, photocopying, faxing, office errands and other projects the Program Director deems necessary.

Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook email, Page maker. Must have excellent communication and people skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality, pay attention to detail, be a quick learner, communicate clearly, ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, able to work independently. Must be punctual, reliable, positive, energetic and have good customer service skills. Ability to work occasional evenings required.

Desired start date: April 1, 2015

Duration: April 1, 2015 – September 1, 2015

Approximate hours per week: 25-30 hrs / wk

Salary / Pay rate: $16.50 / hour
