UCSD Internal Deadline: Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships

The Department of Education has announced the 2015-16 competition for the Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad program.

“This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months…Projects deepen research knowledge on and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula. Projects focusing on Western Europe are not supported.”  (However, you may apply to travel to Western Europe to conduct research focusing on another area of the world.)

Eligibility – Applicants should read the entire eligibility page for lots more important info, but here is a small portion of the information:

A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if he or she:

  • -Is a citizen or national of the United States or is a permanent resident of the United States;
  • -Is a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the United States who, when the fellowship begins, is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution;
  • -Is planning a teaching career in the United States upon graduation; and
  • -Possesses adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation project.

Students interested in applying should also read the FAQ and every word of the Federal Register program description.  The Federal Register lists funding priorities and review criteria, along with submission instructions, application process, etc.

UCSD Internal Deadline – UCSD’s internal deadline for submission is Friday, April 17, at 8:00 AM.  Student’s entire applications, including all letters of reference, must be uploaded into the G5 system by this time.
