2017 Switzer Environmental Fellowships

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the application period for 2017 Switzer Environmental Fellowships is now open!  Switzer Fellowships are given to top graduate students in New England and California who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, and who are committed to a career in environmental improvement.

The Switzer Fellowship provides:

  • a one-year $15,000 cash award;
  • access to other Switzer grant programs and career support, and
  • membership in the Switzer Fellowship Network, an active and engaged community of nearly 600 environmental leaders in the U.S. and around the world.

This year, we are particularly interested in seeing more applications from minority students, and those whose work encompasses an environmental justice or equity component.  Additionally, we want to make sure we continue to receive as many applications as possible from appropriate masters-level programs.  (Please note, we still encourage applications from PhD students as long as there is an applied focus of the applicant’s work, and he or she can articulate their vision for the near-term application of their work.)

As a reminder, the Switzer Fellowship is not intended to be a research fellowship.  Leadership potential is a more significant factor in our evaluation than the specifics of a particular graduate research project.  We fund individuals doing a wide variety of innovative, applied environmental work and we fund Fellows in many different disciplines (e.g., science, law, policy, engineering).  We invite you to check out the News and Issues pages of our website for an idea of the breadth of issues and caliber of work our Fellows are doing.

The Call for Applications describes the Fellowship program and its requirements.  Please pass this on to eligible candidates and colleagues, and post to your financial aid, diversity, or graduate student office bulletin boards!

This year’s application deadline is January 9, 2017.

If you have any questions about the program guidelines or the online application process, please do not hesitate to contact Switzer Foundation staff, below.  Thank you!
