Position: Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Assistant Professor of Chemistry, with focus on Analytical Chemistry

Starting Date:
August, 2020

Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate in Analytical Chemistry or closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/20/20).
2) Evidence of scholarly engagement (e.g., publications, grants/contracts, disciplinary presentations) with an analytical chemistry focus.
3) Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Post-doctoral research experience.
2) Evidence of a research focus in spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and/or chemical separations.
3) Demonstrated experience and training in development and maintenance state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation.
4) Demonstrated experience mentoring undergraduate students in a research setting.
5) Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the graduate level.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

Specific duties as a faculty member in the Cal State LA Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry include:

1) Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in the area of expertise which may include, but not be limited to, Quantitative Analysis lecture and laboratory, Advanced Analytical Chemistry lecture and laboratory series, and General Chemistry lecture and laboratory.
2) Participate in curriculum development which includes modification and improvement of existing courses and development of new courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program which can be supported by external funding, disseminated through scholarly publications, and involve mentoring and training students at the undergraduate and Master’s levels.

Lab Lecturer position at Bryn Mawr College

Laboratory Lecturer in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Bryn Mawr College invites applications for a full-time, continuing non-tenure-track Laboratory Lecturer responsible for instruction in and the supervision of the Organic Chemistry laboratory program to begin August 1, 2020. Academic year responsibilities will involve teaching three laboratory sections each semester, providing pre-lab lectures, supervising instructional staff, coordinating with the lecture course, and organizing and preparing for all experiments. The successful candidate will also engage in the ongoing development of new, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory experiences and be expected to be part of developing and teaching a diverse and inclusive curriculum, including contributing to college-wide initiatives. A Ph.D. is required by the start date and teaching experience is preferred.

The Student Alumni Associates (SSA) is hosting an event to connect students and alumni. “Meet the Boss: Beyond Your Science Degree” explores different career paths that biology (and related majors) can take, besides pre-med, as we know that it’s a decision a lot of students who decide not to go to Medical School struggle with.

The event includes a moderated Q&A, followed by an open networking session, with alumni who majored in Biology (or related majors) at UC San Diego, but pursued careers besides those that require Medical School training. Drug Discovery & Development Graduate Level Courses: Winter & Spring 2020

Graduate Courses in “Principles of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Development”

Theme:  Drug Discovery and Development

     The goal of the 2-quarter series in ‘Principles of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Development’ (PPSDD)[L1]  graduate courses is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of current drug discovery (Part A) and drug development (Part B) processes.  These courses provide training in translational sciences that bridges basic sciences and clinical research for the purpose of addressing the world’s challenges in unmet therapeutic needs.

SPPS 263B, Spring Quarter, 2020 (times to be announced, 3 units): course covers lead optimization, late stage preclinical development, regulatory affairs, and clinical trials.  Course faculty leaders are Conor Caffrey (ccaffrey@ucsd.edu), Carlo Ballatore, and Vivian Hook of SSPPS.

SPPS 263A, Winter Quarter, 2020 (MW 1:30-2:30 pm, F 1:30-3:30 pm, PSB 1182, 3 units): course covers target discovery, lead discovery and early preclinical drug development.  Course faculty leaders are Anthony O’Donoghue (ajodonoghue@ucsd.edu), Larissa Podust, and Ruben Abagyan of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS).

     Graduate students may take both ‘A’ and ‘B’ quarters of the course, or one quarter (‘A’ or ‘B’).
