Below is a brief overview of the program:


The USC School of Pharmacy’s SURF program is geared towards increasing learning and networking opportunities for undergraduate students committed to pursuing either a professional or academic research career in pharmaceutical and translational sciences. Students will develop confidence and independence in conducting research and communicating scientific concepts under the guidance of faculty and other mentors. In addition to daily engagement in the lab, students will attend biweekly entrepreneurship/professional development seminars and participate in a workshop on the graduate school application process so as to stimulate serious consideration of graduate study. At the end of the summer, students will give an oral presentation of their research to their peers and faculty.


  • Participate in cutting-edge research with top USC faculty
  • Receive a $3,500 stipend for a full-time program during summer (June until mid-August)
  • Gain experience and tools to enhance your application to competitive PhD programs
  • Explore the rich and diverse culture of Southern California in Los Angeles while learning about the resources and graduate training opportunities at the USC School of Pharmacy
  • Develop lasting friendships with fellow participants
  • Housing is provided in shared housing on USC’s University Park Campus on ademonstrated financial need basis only. Evidence of financial need can be demonstrated by providing your most current need-based financial aid package.

  • 2017 SURF Application Deadline is March 15, 2017
  • Awardees will be notified by early April, 2017
  • Earliest start date: June 1, 2017

1.   Application open to students in their third or fourth year of study

2.   Minimum GPA of 3.4

5.   Outstanding and exceptional contributions to student life

About Tom Tucker

Tom Tucker served as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs from 1983-2003. He transformed student life at UC San Diego when he instituted innovative student leadership programs, reintroduced Greek life and guided the planning and construction of the Price Center and RIMAC. Most importantly, he touched the lives of thousands of students by encouraging them to realize their potential as student leaders. The scholarship is funded by former A.S. student leaders as a tribute to Dr. Tucker.

The Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) 2013


The Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) provides a forum for the presentation of the best research, scholarship, and creative activities of undergraduate students in the region, and encourages communication of innovative achievements across disciplines. This year’s conference will be hosted by Whittier College on Saturday, November 23, 2013.  Whittier is pleased to welcome SCCUR, and looks forward to a day of celebrating undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity.  
Important Dates:

Registration Opens September 1, 2013
Abstract Submission Deadline October 7, 2013 (soft deadline)
Early Bird Registration Ends November 4, 2013
On-line Registration Opens until November 23, 2013


SCCUR is broadly multi-disciplinary, including the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and applied sciences. Students present their scholarly work either in 15-minute seminar presentations chaired by faculty moderators, in poster sessions, or in exhibition or performance. Students apply to present their work by submitting a proposal in the form of a brief abstract, limited to 300 words. Abstracts are reviewed by faculty from appropriate disciplines at participating institutions and accepted, returned for revision, or declined.

Undergraduate students who wish to present their faculty-mentored research or scholarly/creative activity at SCCUR must complete the registration and abstract submission, which is due by October 7,
2013. (this is a soft deadline)
