The LAUNCH program is designed for full-time students who want to ensure their first step into the workplace puts them on the right path to career success. LAUNCH should be done concurrently with university study, ideally during a student’s junior and senior years.

Why Take LAUNCH?

  •     Jumpstart to some of the most promising jobs today
  •     Practical knowledge from experts in the field
  •     Learn side-by-side with working professionals
  •     Document evidence of additional, focused study
  •     Increase confidence through personal coaching
  •     Stand out as a more competitive job candidate

Program and Application Information

Spring 2013 Applications opened on February 20.

Each LAUNCH student works with a coach who acts as a mentor throughout the program. The coach and student meet quarterly to identify their unique skills and career focus, develop those important “soft-skills” employers are looking for in today’s job candidates and act as a resource to services/programs to help make the difference in landing that all-important first job after graduation.

Students interested in learning more about LAUNCH can email launch@ucsd.edu for more information.

Major Changes to LAUNCH Program

As of Fall 2011, active undergraduate juniors and seniors have the opportunity to receive grant money to cover most course fees for most specialized and professional certificates that Extension has to offer.

This program is offered in cooperation with UCSD Academic Affairs, Undergraduate Education.

Jumpstart your entry into the biofuels or biomass production industries!

The EDGE Biofuels Certificate Program at UCSD Extension provides cutting edge courses and hands-on training to help you get into a career in the biomass production, biofuels or industrial biotech industries.  Two online courses start during the Spring quarter, followed by an intensive 4 week summer labs on campus.

Interdisciplinary Research Awards

2013 Interdisciplinary Scholar Awards
Call for Nominations
WIN $500 in recognition of your research

REPRESENT the interdisciplinary research capacity of our campus
The Graduate Student Association, in coordination with the Office of Graduate Studies, is
seeking graduate students to participate in a competition recognizing excellence in
interdisciplinary research at UC San Diego. Each department is eligible to nominate one
student currently engaged in innovative, interdisciplinary research. A committee composed
of a diverse group of graduate students and faculty will select a small number of Interdisciplinary
Scholars. Awardees will receive a monetary award of $500. Additionally, these students will
present their award-winning research at the 2013 Interdisciplinary Research Awards Ceremony
this coming April.

The 2013 Interdisciplinary Research Awards Ceremony will be open to all students, staff, and
faculty at UCSD as well as members of the community that wish to attend; therefore, the winners
should be able to explain their research and its implications in a way that is accessible to all
attendees.

Application Requirements:
➢ A student-written letter of interest describing an interdisciplinary research project, as well
as how they intend to explain their research to a diverse, non-expert, audience.
➢ Curriculum vitae or academic resume
➢ Two letters of recommendation from faculty members, preferably members of the
student’s committee and/or thesis advisors. These letters must be from faculty in two different
departments.
➢ One letter of recommendation from an UCSD student describing the ability of the
applicant to communicate his or her research.
Criteria for selection:
The applications will be reviewed and scored by a panel of students and faculty members from
varied backgrounds and disciplines. Winners will demonstrate a capacity to weave different
areas of research into a cohesive story as well as their ability to relate their project goals and
findings to a broad audience. The committee will use letters of recommendation and CVs to
further assess the students’ research history and their aptitude and passion for interdisciplinary
research.

Response Deadline:
All nomination and application materials must be received by email no later than March 1, 2013.
Please submit all materials to the GSA Vice President of Academic Affairs Jordan J. Gosselin at
vpacademic@gsa.ucsd.edu. Winners will be notified by March 14, 2013.

Postdoctoral Position in Maters/Surface Chemistry

Postdoctoral Position in Materials/Surface Chemistry, University of San Diego

Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials, or closely related field, and have experience in solid state materials synthesis and characterization. The University of San Diego is a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI), so research in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is typically performed by undergraduates, faculty, and postdoctoral scholars. Candidates interested in pursuing an academic position at a PUI are therefore encouraged to apply. The candidate will have the opportunity if desired to teach a course at USD under the mentorship of the PI, although this is not a requirement. The main research project involves the preparation and characterization of ZIF thin films for fundamental investigations of energy-relevant gas adsorption and reactivity. Techniques will include XPS, TPRS, XRD, and SEM, so some experience with this instrumentation is desirable.

The start date for this position is on or after May 1st. Send CV and contact information for 3 references to Professor Lauren Benz, laurenbenz@sandiego.edu. To learn more about the group please visit http://lauren-benz.com/.
