The UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry – Industry Day !

The UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry & the Chemistry-Biology Interfaces (CBI) Training Grant plan to host their annual Industry Day event on Friday June 21, 2019 in the NSB Auditorium. The goal of this event is to enhance the interaction between our PhD students with our colleagues in industry. The event will feature speakers primarily from biotech, pharm, and nanotech fields. The program will include talks by industrial scientists, lightning talks by doctoral students, and a panel discussion to provide advice to graduate students on how to pursue a career in industry.

So far the speaker line-up includes industry guests from BASF, Janssen, Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Vertex, and more! For more information on the event, please visit http://chemistry.ucsd.edu/go/industry-day.

Lunch and dinner will be provided at the event. If you plan to attend, be sure to RSVP (no later than June 14, 2019.

Volunteers Needed

The Morimoto Lab in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department is looking for volunteers interested in participating in a study of a laparoscopic training system.

The study will take place in the Center for the Future of Surgery. The volunteer will be asked to train on his or her own time using one of three possible training methods. A basic skill level assessment will be performed before and after the training period. The purpose of the study is to compare the use of the new interface with standard training methods in order to develop more engaging and cost-effective training solutions.

There will be no compensation. Instead, through this study, volunteers will get to experience testing a novel training interface. For more information on how to sign up, please send inquiries to morimotolab@eng.ucsd.edu. Your assistance in helping us meet our research goals would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations, Enid Partika!

Murray Goodman Endowed Lecture

Just a reminder about the upcoming Murray Goodman Endowed Lecture this Friday, May 17th at 4:00PM in the Kavli Auditorium (Tata Hall). Please see below for more details on the lecturer, Dr. Helma Wennemers:

Brief CV:   Helma Wennemers is an organic chemist whose research concentrates on asymmetric catalysis, chemical biology, and synthetic materials. She develops peptides to address the question whether small molecules can fulfill functions for which nature evolved large macromolecules. This scope includes the development of bioinspired asymmetric catalysts and functionalizable collagen, and molecular scaffolds for applications in supramolecular and biological chemistry (e.g., cell-penetrating peptides, and tumor targeting) and the controlled formation of metal nanoparticles.   Helma received her PhD degree from Columbia University, New York, and did postdoctoral studies at Nagoya University before joining Basel University as the Bachem-endowed Assistant Professor. In the fall of 2011 Helma moved to ETH Zurich where she is Professor of Organic Chemistry.
