We have an immediate opening for a Student Laboratory Assistant Position to assist with CHEM 105.

Job Description for General Student Laboratory Assistant III:

  • Clean and organize the undergraduate teaching labs, chemistry stockroom, and storage areas.   
  • Wash lab glassware and chemical containers. 
  • Deliver reagents and supplies to the laboratories. 
  • Provide                supplies to the students taking lab courses. 
  • Under supervision, assist in making unknowns and reagents used by the undergraduate labs.
  • Collection and removal of hazardous waste.  
  • Minor equipment cleaning, repair, and maintenance, Other projects when assigned.
  • Must work around hazardous, poisonous, carcinogenic substances constantly.

Job Description for the 105 Students Laboratory Assistant Position.

The goal is to help ensure that the teaching laboratories are properly supplied and prepared for the safe

experimentation of the students each day.

Most of the responsibilities duties are included here; others are included in the goal of the position as

Laboratory Assistant.

Important duties! Checking, cleaning, organizing before and after each session is important because other students meet in 1322/1344 rooms at different times from 105 Lab sessions.

  • clean hood windows
  • clean hoods area and  shelves in hoods, organize as needed
  • clean blackboard and remove  dust of chalk at the bottom rail of blackboards
  • move chemical waste to EH&S pick up room, replace with properly labeled bottles for each experiment.
  • pick up brushes from sinks so they do not rust
  • pick up any trash  papers or glassware from sinks and laboratory
  • replace worn or deteriorated labels as needed on any chemical container
  • check frequently and add water to water baths as needed when not in use
  • set paper towels as needed by the sinks (just 1/2 of a pack per sink)
  • dust tables, mostly under electrical cables,  and monitors for each instrument
  • refill DI water bottles, acetone wash bottles, and solvent reagent bottles as needed
  • move back any chemicals left out of their site (i.e., by the balances) to their  shelves, or freezer.Check level of chemical waste replace bottle as needed
  • Check level on chemicals report to me if less than 1/3 amount.
  • Check-pressure on gas cylinders as: N2, argon, N2O, and the liquid N2
  • Supply students and keep log in 1808YH with loans of special glassware i.e. :R gas constant flask, cuvettes, viscometers
  • Update Inventories: Laboratory chemicals, chemicals in “Boxes”, solvents,  and the         various supplies in 1322, 1344 and 1808
  • Check that laboratory trash has been picked up once a week, and the floor has been mopped twice per month (call Facility Management x42930 if needed)
  • Dust (once or twice per week) very important around instruments and computers
  • Wash and organize glassware as needed
  • Under direct supervision move / mark stuff for surplus  or repair and chemicals not used in several years to ChemCycle.  Perform other tasks not listed here but may be required for the 105 or other laboratories.
  • Two hours before laboratory starts turn ON the water baths for the viscosity experiment, and turn them OFF at end of session. 
  • At the end of each session check that the instruments have been turned OFF, but leave ON the  FT-IR.      Leave turned ON only the water baths that have samples in them. To avoid burning heating elements, be sure water baths have enough water before they are being used.
  • In a team operation with  staff  work on  planning and organizing, to place orders of any needed supplies, or special items.
  • Under direct supervision assist in the evaluation of instruments ensuring they are kept in operating condition. Keeping a log notebook of any maintenance, repair, or observations.
