MRS Broadening Participation in Materials Program

Greetings, Chemistry Undergrads!

Please see information below regarding the Materials Research Society (MRS)’s Broadening Participation in Materials Program. If you would like the department to nominate you to attend, please contact

“The 2017 MRS Spring Meeting is just around the corner – April 17-21 in Phoenix, AZ!  We are gearing up for a great event that is sure to be packed full of exhibitors, renowned speakers, informative and insightful events, training activities and more, specifically targeted at building an interactive global community of students and materials researchers.

The MRS Broadening Participation in Materials Program pairs undergraduate, underrepresented students (including women) with graduate student or postdoc mentors who help them navigate the next steps in their education and career.  Mentee and mentor pairs attend a breakfast workshop together at the Meeting and additional onsite presentations which explore topics such as poster design, science communication, resume and interview preparation, and more.  These skills will be applied during mock interviews, resume critiques and a poster competition, where students are evaluated by a committee of judges and awarded cash prizes.  For the poster competition, accepted students will be expected to design and bring their own scientific research poster to present.

Throughout the Meeting, mentors support their mentee by attending programs, mixers and events together, coaching the mentee on poster design and presentation, and introducing the mentee to their own contacts to assist with professional network-building.

Meeting registration for the first 20 accepted students will be covered in full by MRS. Travel costs will be the responsibility of the student.

To be eligible for the free meeting registration, all mentees must attend the following events with their assigned mentors:

Tuesday, April 18

7:15 am – 8:15 am           Mentoring Breakfast

10:00 am – 11:00 am      Poster Presentation Success

1:30 pm – 2:30 pm          Public Speaking and Communications

5:00 pm – 8:00 pm          Undergraduate Student Poster Competition

Additional events on Monday and Wednesday are recommended but not required. Visit the MRS website for more information and to view a complete schedule of events.

Please note that we will only be selecting 20 mentees on a first-come-first-serve basis and preference will be given to rising junior- and senior-level students.  The program has been popular in the past so please sign up early!  Prior to the 2017 MRS Spring Meeting, we will introduce mentees to their mentors via email so that they can learn a little about one another before meeting in person.”
