Translational Medicine Day (TMD)

UCSD’s Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is excited to present the ninth annual Translational Medicine Day (TMD)! TMD is a conference-style event that is dedicated to educating and inspiring students about the field of translational medicine.

Translational medicine is the process by which cutting-edge research that happens here at UC San Diego and other research campuses is turned into therapies, drugs, and devices that directly impact patients on the clinical side of medicine. It is a multidisciplinary field that integrates biology, chemistry, engineering, and bioethics, as well as accounting for industry and government requirements alongside academia.

The event consists of 6 main components:

1. Keynote Speech: 10:00 am

2. Graduate Program Panel: 11:00 am

3. Networking Lunch: 12:00 pm

4. Industry Demos: 1:00 pm

5. Startups Panel: 2:00 pm

6. Ethics Panel: 3:00 pm

At their event, their Graduate Program panel addresses questions for students aspiring to grad/med school or even beyond, as well as how they can use their degree to improve medicine on the clinical side. Representatives from various medical companies, such as Medtronic will also be available at their Industry Demonstrations session and reps from companies such as Takeda will be present at their networking session, giving you the opportunity to interact with advanced medical experts and network with them (and maybe even score that elusive internship!)

In addition, their Speaker Sessions are seminar-style presentations that detail what’s being done on the forefront of translational medicine. Finally, their Ethics Panel this year focuses on the topic of Women’s Health!
