International Research Experience for Undergrads (IREU)

The ACS International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (IREU) and ACS International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program are bilateral exchanges that allows talented young chemical and materials scientists to spend 10-12 week during summer conducting research abroad.

This experience will have you working on frontier chemical and materials science research projects under the guidance of faculty members and graduate student mentors to sharpen scientific skills, develop collaborations with scientists abroad, and experience the life and culture of a foreign country.

In the summer of 2014, 17 students from the United States will be selected to conduct research in Germany, Italy, Singapore, or the United Kingdom through the program.

Summer Research Outside the United States

This portion of the exchange is only for U.S. undergraduate students enrolled at a U.S. institution. Students must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students do not need to be a member of ACS nor is membership status a criteria used in judging applicants.
For further information on how to apply and the benefits the U.S. students receive, please visit the research outside the U.S. page.

Grad SLAM – Showcase your work!

Dear Graduate or Professional Student,

Happy New Year, and welcome back to campus!

I am excited to announce that the Office of Graduate Studies will spearhead a new event — Grad SLAM – in Spring 2014.  This will be a competitive speaking event to showcase the impact of your research, and held between March 31 – April 9, 2014.  Participating graduate students will compete in preliminary rounds during the week of March 31 – April 4, 2014, with a select number advancing to the final round on Wednesday, April 9, 2014.  A panel of judges will award the second and third place students $1,000 each, and the top competitor will receive $2,500!

The presentations will be three minutes long and should be designed to be accessible and understood by those outside the presenter’s field – essentially, a mini “TED talk”.  No powerpoint or similar visual aids may be used.  Presenters will be placed in preliminary rounds of 6-10 fellow graduate students to be judged by a small panel of academically diverse faculty and staff.  The top three presenters in each round will each receive $50 prizes, and the top presenter will move on to the final round.  All presentation rounds will be open to the campus community and the general public.

Registration is now open until February 28, 2014.  Additional details about the Grad SLAM can be found at: http://ogs.ucsd.edu/gradslam.

I look forward to your participation!
