Chemistry/Biochemistry Holiday Dinner

We are writing to invite you to our annual Chemistry and Biochemistry Holiday Event from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Ballroom in the Price Center. Food, drink, and holiday spirit will be provided.  This year, we will have:

  1. Raffle prizes, open to all department staff, students and faculty
  2. ‘Comical chemistry video’ competition
  3. Chemistry community slide show
  4. Ugly sweater contest
  5. Donation bin for Moores Cancer Center patients

The donation bin for the Moores Cancer Center patients will be located in 2040 Urey Hall.  The donation items are for the patients in the chemotherapy room to keep them warm during treatment.  Ideas for donations include blankets, gloves, scarves, hats, slippers, socks, small pillows, etc.

Test Preparation Instructor Positions

We are seeking test preparation instructors for our GRE, SAT and/or ACT classes. These are part-time positions with classes once per week on Sundays (GRE and SAT) and/or Saturdays (ACT).  We seek intelligent, charismatic instructors who have both top test scores and excellent teaching skills. As the best test prep value, our company offers six week, high-quality test preparation courses at a value price.

Salary: $45/hour for GRE classroom instruction; $35/hour for SAT and ACT classroom instruction.
Qualifications:

  • Education: Current graduate or professional student Ph.D. (or equivalent), Master’s, J.D.; or Completed Ph.D. (or equivalent), Master’s degree, or J.D.
  • Test Scores: Top-tier test scores on one of the following: GRE, LSAT, GMAT, SAT, or ACT.
  • Teaching Experience: Have taught at least one semester/quarter lecture, lab, discussion, recitation, etc. class. Prior university teaching experience is required.
  • Quantitative and Verbal Skills: Must have bothexcellent math and verbal/writing skills. Xceptional Prep Instructors teach the entire course.
  • Consistent Weekend Commitment: Our test preparation offerings depend upon instructor reliability, commitment and consistency. We seek instructors who can teach on consecutive weekends: Our 6 Week GRE and SAT Courses are taught on Sundays; Our 6 Week ACT Courses are taught on Saturdays. Instructors can teach anywhere from 3 to 9 hours per weekend depending upon location.

3rd-annual UC-wide Chemistry Symposium (March 26-28, 2018) – Deadline December 15

The 3rd-annual UC-wide Chemistry Symposium (March 26-28, 2018) for grad students and postdocs is open for abstract submissions!  Abstracts are due December 15, 2017.

For $259 (which includes lodging and dining), your students and postdocs can meet other graduate students in the chemical sciences from across the UC-system, share their results, and participate in career development activities.  The conference is during UC’s spring break, so there is no conflict with teaching, TA responsibilities, or the spring ACS.  I truly hope you will encourage your group members to participate in this student-organized and run GRS-style conference.4. 2018 UCCS Flyer

IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI)

The IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) provides a unique opportunity for recent graduates to become actively involved in the science policy arena through the Science Policy Fellowship Program. This two-year, paid fellowship provides recent bachelor’s degree recipients with a unique opportunity to use their critical thinking and analytic skills to work on a diverse set of challenges in science and technology (S&T) policy areas, including space sciences, innovation and competitiveness, energy, health and life sciences, national security, biotechnology, information technologies, and STEM education. Fellows will be involved in collaborative research with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and other Federal Government organizations, such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

This is a full-time position and is only open to recent recipients of a bachelor’s degree (conferred within the May 2016 – July 2018 timeframe), including recipients of a master’s degree if their bachelor’s was received in or after May 2016. Candidates with degrees in engineering, life sciences, physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, computer science, mathematical sciences, statistics, and learning sciences are encouraged to apply. U.S. citizenship is required.

2018 AFRL Repperger Research Internship Program

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) is currently accepting applications for its 2018 AFRL Repperger Research Internship Program. This civilian research opportunity is a 10-week summer program intended for MS/PhD candidates pursuing degrees in STEM. Each year the laboratory will appointment a couple exceptional undergraduate students into the program.  There are 36 posted opportunities, once the application January 21, 2018 deadline passes, each application will be reviewed and AFRL will fund 15 participants for the summer period.  Check out the opportunity catalog to review all of the available opportunities, there are available research opportunities in nearly every STEM field!
